Abstract

How to Start Treating Cases with Confidence: a Step-by-Step Guide from the Initial Visit to the Final Stages

The management of orthognathic surgery patients remains one of the most challenging aspects of clinical orthodontics, often hindered by diagnostic uncertainty and the complexity of coordinating a structured multidisciplinary treatment pathway. This presentation aims to guide clinicians through all the key phases of combined orthodontic-surgical treatment — from the initial consultation to the retention phase — using a clear, structured and reproducible step-by-step protocol. Topics will include diagnostic and cephalometric criteria for identifying suitable surgical candidates, principles of pre-surgical orthodontic preparation, timing of surgical referral, effective communication and collaboration with the maxillofacial surgeon at each stage of treatment, joint reassessment strategies, and comprehensive post-surgical patient management through to finishing and retention. The goal is to provide clinicians with the conceptual and practical tools needed to approach these complex cases with clarity, sound method, and clinical confidence.
